There are no extant “known ancestor” species to Homo sapiens. None of our closest relatives among surviving species of primates are ancestral to us, rather we share descent from common ancestors a LONG time ago. Whether or not humans could interbreed with another existing primate species is unknown, and in my view that is knowledge we should place off limits to anybody. And, as to whether a species ancestral to Homo sapiens could have interbred with us, the answer is likely, perhaps certainly yes, considering what we know about how speciation proceeds. But how could we ever know that, lacking a time machine?
