Warren Hastings was Governor General of Bengal from 1773 to 1785 after inacting the Regulation Act in 1773. He became Governor General of India. But later through the Charter Act passed in 1833, William Bentinck became the Governor General of Bengal. Usually this post of Governor General is also called Viceroy of India. The government of India Act was passed in the year 1858 only then the Governor General can be appointed.
