Martha Washington, was the daughter of their cook, and was Helen's childhood companion. She had no problem in understanding Helen's signs, and hence they were mostly together, always up to something or the other. Helen loved the can-do spirit that Martha exhibited, as she was always ready to do anything that Helen asked her to do. Being an unruly child Helen was always up to mischief and tyrannised the family and companions alike, it was also out of the sympathy that they held for her that she had her way, for example incidents like locking her mother in the pantry etc.
