The Balkans was a region of geographical and ethnic variation comprising of the modern day Bulgaria, Croatia, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Romania,etc.
A large part of the region was under ottoman empire
Each power - Russia, Germany, England and Austro-Hungary wanted control over this area
With the spread of nationalism, the balkan people wanted freedom
So , this area became an area of conflict
This led to a series of wars in the region and finally the first world war (W.W I )
This is why the area of Balkans was a region of national terror
