vellalas is a Tamil forward caste found mainly in the Indian states of Tamilnadu, Kerala and in North Eastern part of Sri Lanka. Their traditional occupation is agriculture also serving as landlords. They were major patrons of literature in medieval era. They were a dominant secular aristocratic caste who contributed as countiers, army officers, low rank of the bureaucracy and upper layer of the peasantry.
