The sinhala nationalists wanted the tamils out and as a result war broke out.
The impact was hundreds of thousands dead, economic collapse and several years behind in development. We would have been the shining star of South Asia if not for the war. Even today, we are the most tolerant society with a highest human development index in all of South Asia.
We are in the middle of a cultural revolution where the new generations are being Westernized and the Sinhala nationalists are feeling the traditions eroding.
President Rajapaksa finished the war but we need the UNP government to stay in power to continue the development of the country.
