The Salt March Success lead by Gandhi was 229 miles and took 24 days. It eventually turned into a success when the British released protesters from prison and allowed the people to make their own salt. When Gandhi went to England, with the permission of the British, he was welcomed, but the conference there did not go well. Gandhi still believed that the Untouchables should be treated like any other Hindus. When Gandhi went back to India he started another fast, trying to convince the politicians to change their decision about the Untouchables. He eventually was successful with the fast. The next few years he did welfare work for the Untouchables and the other less fortunate. Soon Britain got closer to Indian home rule, giving them their own control of local affairs. Once World War II started, the British believed that they had to defeat their opponents before giving India independence. After the war the Indian National Congress passed its resolution telling the British to “ quit India.” When Gandhi was arrested the British were attacked. However, it seemed to Gandhi that his hopes for India would never be realized.

While the Salt March was a successful step forward towards India’s independence, the events following it show a tug-of-war like struggle between the Indian people and the British. Although, the delegates of the Round Table Conference opinions of the Untouchables were a step back, Gandhi successfully countered it with his fast. The next step forward was the 1935 Government of India Act, but was hindered by World War II. Again, the British dealt a heavy blow with Sir Stafford Cripps’ bill, “‘Indian Union,’” which would divide India. Taking charge, The Indian National Congress refused Cripps’ bill and demanded Britain “‘quit India.” Unfortunately, the British retaliated by arresting Gandhi and other Indian leaders. Outraged, the Indian people rallied for a protest, which quickly spiraled into violence, specifically against Gandhi’s Satyagraha ideals and a terrible step backwards. Even though the events selected do not show a clear winner in the struggle for India’s independence, it does display the determination of the Indian people to achieve it.
