1) Tribals who used to live in the forests were forced to serve in plantations, when they were barred from living in the forest.
2) Often labour was also bought in from lower plains to the hills as indentured labour.
3) Plantation workers were not allowed to leave the tea garden without permission.

many tribes were recruted to work in tea, coffee, rubber plantations.tribes mostly from jharkhand, chattisgarh, maharastra,Assam, were forced to work as endangered laboures, plantation workers etc... their working condition was not at all good. they were paid very low wages. and they couldn't return their home easily.
