In the 1984 general election, Banerjee became one of India's youngest parliamentarians ever, defeating veteran Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee, to win the Jadavpur parliamentary Constituency in West Bengal.

In 1984 mamata banerjee defeated Somnath Chatterjee in lok sabha election.

Somnath Chatterjee was won in 1971 and mamata banerjee was the only one who was defeated him in 1984 from Jadavpur and became the youngest west Bengal women chief minister.

Somnath Chatterjee died on 13th august 2018. Somnath Chatterjee replaced his father in 1971 in the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.
