Question : Why 40 J/°C is equal to 40 J/K ?

explanation : J/°C or J/K is a unit of heat capacity (or thermal capacity)

and you know, heat capacity is the amount of heat to be supplied to a given mass of material to produce a unit change in its temperature.

read definition carefully, you get heat capacity, S = Q/∆T

here ∆T is change in temperature.

now in degree calcius scale,

boiling point = 100°C

feeding point = 0°C

change in temperature = 100 - 0 = 100

in Kelvin scale,

boiling point = 373 K

freezing point = 273 K

change in temperature = 373 - 273 = 100

you see changes in temperature are same for both cases. so either we take heat capacity in °C or we taken heat capacity in K, we get the same value. that's why 40 J/°C is equal to 40 J/K.
