For a body to float in a liquid, the condition is that, it's density shall be less than the density of water. Therefore, when a body dies, the lungs get filled with water and the body sinks in water .
After some time, the tissues decompose forming gases like methane, carbon dioxide etc, hence the body becomes less dense and the body rises.
While a living body sinks due to it's density greater than the density of water.
Hope this helps!!!
