It is frequently stated that the value of the acceleration due to gravity at the pole is larger than at the equator because the poles are closer to the center of the earth due to the earth's oblateness. ... The measured value is larger because the earth's density is not uniform but increases toward the center.

Answer:

is frequently stated that the value of the acceleration due to gravity at the pole is larger than at the equator because the poles are closer to the center of the earth

Explanation:

acceleration due to gravity is inversely proportional to the distance from the centre. g=GM/r

Where r=R+h

The distance of equatorial surface of earth from the cetntre of earth is more than the distance of polar surface from the centre. So , from first point of observation above we can say the acceleration due to gravity is less at equator. But at poles although the distance between is less , the mass of earth that lies below you is still the same and hence lower value of distance and same value of mass at the poles make the acceleration due to gravity comparatively higher at poles than at equator
