Air is used to inflate the tyres because they can be compressible upto some extent of pressure.

air is used to fill tyres because air have no define shape and volume
so only pressure due to air keep the tyre in its desired shape
In case of liquid it will rip the tyre on rest from bottom
In case of solid tyre they will rip themselve appart by the weight of vehicle
for example press a eraser with your hands and it will rip apart
