Why Al2O3 cannot be reduced to Al by using carbon?

Yes, actually, it can, but the temperature has to be 2040C or greater: 3C + Al2O3 = 3CO(g) + 2Al [T > 2040C] Change in Free Energy: ΔG(2040C) = -2.5kJ .
