because they contain green colour pigment called chlorophyll....

algae can be present on vegetation,in the air,soil and water.Their microscopic spores are continuosly introduced into water bodies and other waste reseviors by wind,dust,storms,rain showers etc.. They grow in stagnant waters when exposed to sunlight and temperatures.
