Heya...

Well…festivals are an integral part of a culture which are aligned with some the values (it is true for all cultures). They serve various purpose - community meet, trading opportunity, promoting a message and so on.

(1) Most of the festivals (that I can think of) are associated with stories of our epics/mythology.Through festivals we recollect some of them. Example - the festivals of Vijayadashami is associated with Ramayana or Goddess Durga. People revisit these stories (atleast partially) on this occasion and hence the stories continue to be relevant.

(2) Festivals provides an efficient way to communicate this message. The festivals of Guru Purnima does very well to establish the importance of a teacher. We still see teachers are given a high place in social life.

(3) They also act as a support to religion since these festivals involves poojas of some of other gods. We see that the families prays to goddess Lakshmi on Diwali which automatically promotes the ritual part - an ingredient of culture.

(4) The festivals also gives an opportunity to our dance, music and other art forms. During Onam, various dance activities are done in classical dance forms. This saves these arts form from getting into oblivion.

Essentially the festivals act as a catalyst to our arts, ritual, stories, symbols etc. and hence propagate culture.
