Amelia and Elizabeth were reluctant to tell the truth to their father regarding the mourning dress because they did not want father to think that they were in a hurry to divide his things among themselves and that they had thought that he was dead. They made up the story that Ben's brother had died and they were mourning for the brother. When asked about whether they would go to funeral of Ben's brother they said that they would not be going and would be in mourning for the day in Amelia's house.
