Why are concrete rigid?

Rigid pavements are basically concrete slabs designed and constructed to support vehicular and other traffic. Since the development of strong concrete is by the irreversible chemical reaction of water and cement, the product formed is a rigid concrete mass, hence the description 'rigid pavement'
