n the early years, the cotton textile industry was concentrated in the cotton growing belt of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Availability of raw cotton, market, transport including accessible port facilities, labour, moist climate, etc contributed towards its localisation.

Hey friend,
Following are the geographical requirements for the growth of cotton -
1. Temperature - 20 to 30 degrees
2. Rainfall - 50 to 100 cm
3. Abundant sunshine is required during ripening and picking
4. Soil - alluvial soil or black soil.
Now, these conditions are met in Gujarat and Maharashtra...hence, there is good growth and cultivation of cotton. But the major factor is soil...
Usually cotton is grown on alluvial soil or soil rich in lime, iron, potash, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
Black soil is ideal. Good drainage is essential as water logging is harmful.
Cotton is thus, mainly grown is central and southern India.
Hope it helps!
