Covalent bonds are formed by the sharing of atoms and the direction develops due to difference in electronegativity between the elements taking part in the bonding process. On the other hand an ionic bond is formed by the transfer of electrons and thus the atoms are attracted equally by both the elements taking part in the bond formation.
