In a democracy the citizens choose the people/politicians who will represent them in governing the country. According to each country's constitution elections are held at regular intervals to give the citizens a chance to vote for who will represent them. In most democracies the politicians who receive a majority of votes are elected into government.

Well, the democracy is actually represent the  public ruling. The reason of the election essentiality  is following
1) This helps the public in  choosing  the  development course which they want  and want to adopt. 
2) This directly provide the public the opportunity to select their representatives  and these representative decision can be legitimacy.
3) This also ensures the transparency as well as the accountability   as the public representatives are choosen directly. 
4) This also done to ensure the requirement of the democracy in the country.
