Animals give off carbon dioxide which plants need to make food and take in oxygen which they need to breathe. Plants cells have cell walls and other structures differ from those of animals. Plants have either no or very basic ability to sense. Animals have a much more highly develped sensory and nervous system.

Plants are the basis for almost all other life on the planet. It is easy for us to forget that without plants producing oxygen, we would not be able to breathe the air in the atmosphere. Without plants that grow fruits, vegetables and cereals, we would have nothing to eat. Without plants there are many important medicines that we would no longer be able to make.

We also use plants to make many other things that we use every day including clothes, rubber and paper. It is not only humans who rely on plants, the entire ecosystem of the planet would be drastically different if there were no plants.

There are a lot of different plants around the world. They have adapted to life in many strange and extreme places. Plants such as algae and mosses are much simpler in their structure than trees, flowering plants and grasses which have a root system, a stem, leaves and flowers. Each of these parts plays a part in making, transporting and storing food.
