Why are wheels of vehicle are provided with mud guards?

Wheels of vehicles, when running on ground... emit the thing which is below them in backward direction moreover in the direction they are running in.. this ground mostly contain mud which would not prevent us from getting dirty. so they are provided mudguards to keep us away from the mud or the water..

When the wheel rotates at a high speed, the mud sticking to the wheel flies off tangentially, this is due to inertia of direction. In order that the flying mud does not spoil the clothes of passersby, the wheels are provided with mudguards
