Because they share features of both. They are bipedal where apes are generally not, they have a somewhat larger brain. Their hands are more adapted to holding things vs. climbing in trees. Their heads are sitting on top of their spinal column vs. rotated towards the back of the skull. These and other features show them some place between human and ape.

Because they both share features.

They are bipedal in which apes are not usual as they have a slightly larger brain. Their hands are more appropriate for holding vs Trees climbing.

The heads sit on top of the spinal column and rotated back into the skull.

These and other characteristics show them a place between ape and humans.

Therefore, Australopithecus is considered as connecting link between ape and man.
