Because only oxygen is required and so the RBC carry oxygen and transports to all the cells where as carbon dioxide is carried by plama and is transported back in the air

Inhaled air has greater concentration of Oxygen than Carbon Dioxide.
Whereas, Blood has the vice-versa.
So, as diffusion takes place from higher conc. to lower conc. , both replace each other i.e Carbon dioxide is exhaled and Oxygen is bounded by haemoglobin in blood. As our cells have Carbon element so, Oxygen reacts covalently with this Carbon forming Carbon dioxide and this process continues....
