why can 't we measure a.c by an ordinary ammeter ?

We cant measure because ac is in the form of sin and cos values where as dc can be measured in an ordinary ammeter

Generally ordinary ammeter consists of PMMC (Permanent magnet moving coil ) instruments which can measure dc values only. For ac values we use digital instruments. Hope my answer clear your doubt...
