Why can we treat dy / dx as fraction ?

First of all differentiation means breaking. In order to break the number only we are dividing.

dy/dx = rate of increase of y wrt x.
It is the ratio of  increase in y  corresponding to a very small increase in x.

Since it is a ratio, it is a fraction.
