Carbon dioxide, is a non supporter of combustion, which means it does not burn itself and doesn't let burn(a burning matchstick will extinguish in a CO2 atmosphere).

For this property, CO2 is widely used as a fire extinguisher. It covers the substance on which it is sprayed

1.Carbon dioxide covers the burning substance like a blanket and prevents oxygen supply.
2.It cools down when it comes out which helps in lowering the ignition temperature of burning material.
3.it does not harm material or substance.
