The grandmother could not learn to read or write in her childhood as she born in an era in which education was not necessary for girls...
And she lost her mother and her father married again so no one was there to look after her...
Moreover she was married very young and had children and she passed her time cooking and feeding them.......

The grandmother couldnot learn to read in her childhood becauseher mother died when she was a small girl and her father was a busy man who cannot look on her as her mother.She was married at too young and was too busy in her life that she never thought for being literate but she decided to make her children literate to help them in their life.And also at that time it was not essential for girls to be literate or educated.
