why current is taken as fundamental unit instead of charge ( as charge is more fundamental or basic unit than current ) ?

The current is a fundamental quantity because it doesn't depend upon any other quantity for their measurements.So the current is measured in Ampere (A)
While the quantities which are depend on two or more fundamental quantity is called derived quantities..e.g. Area of rectangle is measured in m^2
