Diamond is currently thought to be the hardest naturalmaterial on Earth, having a hardness of ten out of ten on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diamond is made up of carbon atoms which share strong covalent bonds (where electrons are shared between atoms) and are equally spaced in a lattice arrangement

Diamond has a giant molecular structure. Each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms. A lot of energy is needed to separate the atoms in diamond. This is because covalent bonds are strong, and diamond contains very many covalent bonds.

Diamond is made up of carbon atoms which share strong covalent bonds and are equally spaced in a lattice arrangement. It a giant Covalent Structure, made only from carbon atoms. Each carbon atom forms 4 covalent bonds in a very rigid structure. This makes Diamond the hardest substance known to man.
