The author makes this remark because before Albert could use the hard procured medical certificate for nervous breakdown to get a long leave from the school, Mr. Braun had already set the Headmaster against Albert by complaining against him. Before Albert could get a chance to go to the headmaster with his medical certificate and claim a long leave, he was called in the office and asked to leave the school on his own accord. So Albert did not need to use the certificate. He was expelled from the school. Albert so much wanted to show the certificate to the headmaster and tell him that he himself was not willing to study at his school; he wanted to show him the medical certificate he had obtained from Dr. Weil, however he considered it unnecessary. This not being able to show the certificate hurt him a little.

Answer:
Albert Einstein's financial condition was already poor. Still he indirectly spent some money to get the medical certificate. Despite this, it becomes redundant because he did not need to show it to the head teacher as he was expelled from the school by him. In this way, the medical certificate proved to be useless and almost burning hole in Albert Einstein's pocket.
