Charles Dicken’s (1812 – 1870) ‘Hard Times’ is set in the fictional industrial town of Coketown. Coketown chokes with pollution and people struggle to make ends meet. The upper-middle class ignore the misery and poverty completely, engrossed in their own lives.

There is no scope for and creativity or imagination for the poor people of Coketown, as each one is running around, trying to earn a living. Charles Dickens writes about the negative effect of industrialisation and mechanisation and brings it out through the central character of Sissy Juppe, who tries to find a balance between reality and imagination.
