Why did chuck not show much improvement in the hospital

Chuck didn't show much improvement in the hospital because he had lost the will to recover and was surrounded by grief. Though he was being treated physically by physiotherapy and in other ways, he wasn't enthusiastic and determined about recovering soon.
Treatment and medicines were of no use until he tried to recover by himself.
He was in the denial of the tragedy, and needed mental strength.
