Both, Buddha and Mahavira were contemporaries, and lived and preached in the same part of India, the modern day central Gangetic plains. But they never faced each other, and roamed about so as to avoid each other.
Their birth places were also not far off, and even the social status of both, before renunciation, was the same. Hence, it should have been that both use the same language for propagation of their respective ideas. But both had difference of opinion on this aspect also.
