Father Peter Gilligan, asks God to forgive him because he has spoken words that are unworthy of a priest. ... This is unworthy of a priest because priests are supposed to be called by God to take care of people who need spiritual help, especially as they are dying.

Answer:

Father Gilligan was a sensitive person. Attending to his people in their last hours drained his physical energy. This is why he irritatingly complained the load coming on to him.At the same time he was a devout Christian who understood his duty as the father. He knew how important was it for the dying man to have him say the final prayers but he expressed reluctance to attend the call of a sick man.Such moral awareness made him feel very guilty and apologize to God for having complained about the load coming on to him.
