India started military action against the Portuguese in December 1961, also known as the Liberation of Goa.

The action was taken by the Republic of India to annex the Portuguese Indian territories of Daman, Diu and Goa and make them a part of the Indian Republic.

The military action was known as Operation Vijay and involved land, sea and air strikes in ending the 451 years to rule by the Portuguese in these territories. It ended with the victory of Indians.
