he used gold foil as he wanted to get as thin layer as of 1000atoms. So gold being highly malleable he used this GOLD.
his observations were - very few particles deflected at 180 degree angle and most particles went straight without vetting deflected and few particle were deflected at small angles.
His conclusions were- most of the space on atom is empty and very less area of dense pressures is in the centre as it was capable of deflecting it forcefully at 180degree and few space is inscribed by electrons.
