The movement apparently originated in the Tamil region around the 6th and 7th century AD and accomplished a great deal of prevalence through the songs of the Alvars and Nayanars, the Vaishnavite and Shaivite writers. Recognizing from both high and low classes, these minstrels conceived a formidable body of research that firmly entrenched itself in the traditional literature.
