British believed in imperialism, so they always tried to expand there territorial boundaries. They always entered new lands to set up colonies in search of profitable trade and in this way they entered India also. they wanted to be in competition with other trading companies of Europe and in this way they always tried to increase in trade. This led to colonialization of India by British. They also felt that local religion, language, culture etc lack in scientific knowledge so this was one such reason.

The history of the British Raj refers to the period of British rule on the Indiansubcontinent between 1858 and 1947. The system of governance wasinstituted in 1858 when the rule of the East India Company was transferred to the Crown in the person of Queen Victoria (who in 1876 was proclaimed Empress of India).
