why did the French government increase the tax

French government increased the tax because as louis 16ascended the throne he found an empty treasury.the war resulted in great economic crisis . they had even helped America fight with Britain.they spent a lot of money for the maintenance of Versailles etc.that is why the government needed to increase the taxes.

The french government increased the taxes beacuse of the following reasons:

(i) There was no other option of getting more money to pay their taxes and loans.

(ii) The king's wife had many expenses, she uses to spent a lot of money on her looks.

(iii) The extravagant court required lot of money to be maintained.
