Answer: The whole village thought that Muff Potter had killed the Doctor as someone saw him washing blood off his clothes in the morning.  Also Red Joe made up a story that Muff Potter had killed the Doctor with his knife. Although The story was fake, everyone beleived Red Joe and Muff Potter was sent to prison
