the author did not want to take cheese with him on the trip. he narrates an incident where his friend sends cheese with him from liverpool to london. on his way, the cheese start rotting so people avoid him, which he thought was rude. the friend's wife too can't stand the smell of the cheese and so, she moves out. the author did not want the same to happen to george and harris and himself during their journey upriver, so he refuses in taking cheese.
