In fishes and frogs, external fertilization takes place that is fertilization happens outside body. Large number of eggs and sperms are released as sperms do not have a definite path to fertilize the egg and even the eggs do not have any protective layer, the eggs sometimes are eaten by the predators. So to increase the chances of fertilization, eggs and sperms are released in large numbers.

In hen, internal fertilization takes place. Here, sperms have a specific path to fertilize the egg and even after fertilization the egg is safe due to a presence of protective layer. So, there is no need of producing so many eggs in case of hen

Though these animals lay hundreds of eggs and release millions of sperms, all the eggs do not get fertilized and develop into new individuals. This is because the eggs and sperms get exposed to water movement, wind and rainfall. Also, there are other animals in the pond which may feed on eggs. Thus, production of large number of eggs and sperms is necessary to ensure fertilization of at least a few of them.
