It is due to the breaking down of the soft lining of the uterus. The lining is formed making the uterus ready to receive the fertilized egg. In case the egg is not fertilized, then the lining breaks down and is released as blood from the vagina. This is called periods. This occurs at an interval of 27-30 days.

The ovum released by the ovaries moves from ovaries towards uterus. If during this period it gets fertilized then results in pregnancy. But if it doesn’t get fertilized then the uterine wall breaks and sheds off leading to bleeding. This bleeding is known as periods and it happens in every 27-30 days.
