Impurities dissolved in water increase its conductivity:

  • The pure water contains no ions in it and it does not conduct electricity. It doesn’t even contain any acid or base content in it.
  • So it will be free of ions and there will be no free electrons in it. This kind of water is also known as distilled water.
  • But the water which contains an acid or base content, the ions get displaced in the water from their acids or bases or salts even thereby forming some free electrons in the water content.
  • The electricity will pass through any substance only if that substance has free electrons.
  • In the case of "pure water" there will "no free electrons" in it so no electricity is passed through it.
  • But if the water is having any dissolved impurities there will be having free electrons in it, so electricity is passed through it.
