why do make a deeper footprint in mud than on dry ground

In mud the layer is very soft as it absorbed water so it make deeper holes

Deeper footprint is form in mud because it is soft so it presses down and takes up the shape of the foot where is dry ground is hard and does not pics of the shape so easily.
