Explain why metals tend to formcations, while nonmetals tend to form anions. With one, two, or three valence electrons metalstend to lose electrons to achieve a noble gas configuration. (Itwould require more energy to gain the 5 – 7 electrons needed to fill their valence shell.)

Metals are electro-positive meaning they tend to give out electrons and become electrically positive hence, forming cations. This phenomenon occurs due to metals have less valence electrons.

On the other hand, non metals form anions because they have more valence electrons and hence they gain electrons to become stable making them negatively charged and form anions. This is called elctro-negativity of non-metals.
