why do most of the electrical devices require ac voltage these days?

AC voltage can be stepped up or stepped down using transformers. Their power can be controlled using transformers.Also AC voltage have a particular frequency and hence they change their direction hence this changing electriec current direction and magnitude helps to produce magnetic fields also.
Hence most electrical devices require AC voltage.
