People living on mountains are more prone to goitre , as most of them have iodine deficiency. Iodine is a key element in maintaining normal thyroid function, the deficiency of which leads to goitre. In the mountains ,the soil and water have lower amounts of iodine,leading to lowered intake of iodine. In India,the Himalayan belt is often termed as the ‘goitre belt' stretching around 2,400 kms.It may lead to serious intellectual disability.Timely diagnosis of the condition by estimating the T3 and T4 levels(thyroid hormones ),urinary secretion of iodide and also estimating the levels of iodine in water can help prevent the condition.
